Ending FAHM and our Pinay Visionaries in Santa Clara Valley is Elaine Castillo who was born in Milpitas and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in comparative literature. In 2009, Castillo moved to London and later received an MA in Creative & Life Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London. America Is Not the Heart is her debut novel, and was named one of the best books of 2018 by NPR, Real Simple, Literary Hub, The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, New York Post, Kirkus Reviews, the New York Public Library, and more. It has been nominated for the Elle Award, the Center for Fiction Prize, the Aspen Words Prize, the Northern California Independent Booksellers Book Award, and the California Book Award. Our Pinay Visionary feature for today is Dr. Estella Habal, a Professor Emerita of Asian American Studies San Jose State University where she taught the “Filipino Experience in the U.S” and other Asian American Studies classes. She was heavily involved in the Anti-Eviction Movement of the International Hotel as an activist in the Union of Democratic Filipinos.
